What Are Sports?

Sports

Sports are organized games where participants compete against each other. The performances are usually governed by rules and standards that are agreed upon by a recognised organisation. The rules and standards are important because they ensure fair competition and consistent adjudication of the winner. In addition, they ensure that the activities are organised and delivered with a sense of formality.

The word’sport’ comes from the Old French word ‘desport’, which means leisure or recreation. The earliest English use of the word dates to around 1300 and refers to activities that humans find entertaining and amusing.
